Land Area:
15 bighas 2 kathas and 14 lecha.
Built up area: the built up area is inclusive of Administrative wing, Library Building, class room area, computer room, Girls’ common room, (Boys’ common room under construction), vehicle shed, canteen, garden, Principal’s quarter cum guest house and Girls’ hostel.
Communication: Regular city buses ply from Guwahati to Hajo. Besides, trekkar, Tata sumo and other public buses to Doulasal Barpeta and Nalbari towns going through Hajo are also available. The Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is only 32 K.Ms away. The silk village Sualkuchi , famous for 'Pat'and 'Muga' clothes is 15 K.Ms away and easily communicable from Hajo.
Formerly known as Hajo Anchalik College, the college was established in 29.8.79 with 42 students in the pre-university class with the permission from the Gauhati University. The people of Hajo with their physical and mental contributions started this premier institution of Higher Education in the SBSKR H.S. School building at Hajo. From the initial stage till the present day the No. 1 Hajo Gaon Panchayat Samabai Samiti is making substantial contribution towards the development of the college. It is to be mentioned here that the No. 1 GPSSL has already started a two-storied RCC building for science stream and the construction work is going on in full swing.
The family of late Suren Das (20 Feb. 1925 – 18 March 1982), a noble man of philanthropic outlook, donated the two-storied RCC building of the college on the land relinquished in favour of the college by the Dhoparguri Satra authority. Dr. J.M. Choudhury laid the foundation stone of the present two-storied building, the then Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University on 8/2/82. In order to keep the memory late Suren Das Sponsoring Body of the college decided to rename the college as Suren Das College in 1985. The college has come under deficit-grants in-aid system w.e.f. 1/1/1987.
* Affiliation:
It is affiliated to Gauhati University from the year 1983-84. The college has already received permanent affiliation by the Gauhati University w.e.f. 1994 and is registered under 2(F) and 12(B) of the U.G.C. Act 1956 w.e.f. 1994-95.
The college has been accredited by NAAC and has awarded C++ Grade.
* Objective:
a. To impart and disseminate higher education both in letter and spirit.
b. To create an atmosphere for social peace and amity.
c. To popularize the ideas of national integration, secularism and democracy.
d. To foster a scientific outlook amongst the youth.
e. To encourage leadership quality amongst the youths.
f. To lay emphasis on teaching, research and extension as per new guidelines of the University Grant Commission.
g. To popularize the indigenous arts and crafts.
h. To foster work culture with the motto: service before self.
i. To inspire the students to preserve what is pure in our environment and to educate them to keep it unpolluted.
j. To encourage the weaker section of the society more especially the SC/ST and other background communities to receive higher education through liberal scholarship facilities.
